Book reviews #11: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

Processed with VSCO with preset(Norse mythology by Neil Gaiman, Publisher: Bloomsbury publishing)

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly reincarnating Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki, the son of giants, a trickster, and unsurpassable manipulator. From Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerges the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

Norse mythology

I have to start with this: I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman, the universes he creates, what he does with the ones that exist, namely mythologies (Do I need to talk about American Gods?). My all time favorite is The Ocean at the end of the lane. But I won’t talk too much about this one here, as I am supposed to do a review of Norse Mythology.

Here, it is not about creating something new, but telling in his own way the Norse myths and legends. I  borrowed the audiobook version so I can only speak about it but to say it shortly: I LOVED it! Neil Gaiman himself will whisper to you the secrets of the Nordic Gods, from how they came to be, to their end with Ragnarok.

It was a bit like being sitting around a fire, and listening to old tales, visualizing them becoming alive in front of you.

I can only recommend this book, at least the audio version, if you are a fan of Neil Gaiman, of myths and legends and want to feel some ancient magic flowing in your ears!

Have you read/listen to it?

See you for a cup!
