Hello Bookdragons! I was extra super lucky to receive an ARC of Legendary (one of my most anticipated release of 2018 let me remind you!) thanks to Raincoast books. I loved Caraval, the first book of the series, dearly. It was so unique and wonderful. Well, let me tell you that Legendary did not disappoint! If you have not yet started this series, I invite you to read my review of Caraval. Otherwise, dive with Tella and me into Legendary!
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.
The game is just starting…
« Every story has four parts – the beginning, the middle, the almost ending, and the true ending. »
You thought you had seen it all in Caraval, but what if that was only the beginning, what if Tella’s story was only starting? What if the real game was just being set into place?
Caraval is leaving Isla de los Suenos to go to Valenda, the capital. It is time to celebrate the Empress birthday, and for that, the game gets upgraded to a new level! Winning Caraval means saving her long-lost mother… and her own life. But to do so, she has to find Legend’s true name and identity, not such an easy task. Add to that, new players entering the game: The Fates. Old deities trying to come back to power. And let me tell you they are not that benevolent. At all.
In this second book, we are still deep into the Caraval game, but Garber also expands her world-building, with the introduction of a mythology inspired by the same magic we discovered on Isla de los Suenos. If it took me a little while to dive into it, I quickly learned to love this new side of the Caraval universe!
Tella’s side of the story
“There were shipwrecks more graceful than Tella.”
I must say, in the first book, I was not the biggest fan of Tella. But following her in this book made me understand her more. She is still not my favorite character ever but she is brilliant none the less! We discover more and more about her, what drives her and why. We dive into her past, her thoughts, her dreams, and her nightmares. And if there is one thing that can be said about Tella, it is that she is ALIVE, 100%. Whatever she does, she does it with all her soul and heart. And that makes it quite an adventure to follow her! From the game of Caraval to the game of the Fates, from her growing love to her deep suspicions, you will follow Tella through Legendary without hesitation or second thought. And when you will finally close the book, you will have no doubt: the true ending is still very far!
The FREAKING writing!
The air tasted like wonder. Like candied butterfly wings caught in sugared spiderwebs, and drunken peaches coated in luck.
If there is one thing that captivates me with Stephanie Garber, it is her writing. Like her characters, you do not know what is real or not, you feel like you are in the most vivid and wonderful dream. Her descriptions are enchanting and magical. Like something you would find in a fairyland: wishes, fallen stardust, butterfly wings and sparkling secrets. I can’t help and be transported by this world. I know not everybody likes such an embellished writing, but for me, it is like stepping into a magical place, like seeing the magic of the world before my eyes!
In a few words
Even if I would have liked more time for some developments, the magic was still there, darker and more irresistible than before. Dive into this book like in a whimsical dream…but be careful, it can so easily turn into a nightmare! Stick to Tella, don’t let her out of sight, and be sure you’ll come out of the game alive 😉
See you for a cup!
