Hello bookdragons! I know I’m a bit late on the Geekerella train but I had the chance to be offered the book in one of the recent Chapters Indigo box, and as I wanted to read it for a very long time, I did not wait long before opening that one 😉

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic science-fiction series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck and her dad’s old costume, Elle’s determined to win – unless her stepsisters get there first.
Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons – before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he has ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake – until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

A great retelling

Geekerella, as the title says it, is a retelling of Cinderella in a more modern way. And it’s a success for me: different elements of the « original » fairy tale are represented here, and it’s very well done. A non-spoiler example: The Magical Pumpkin is here, it’s a food truck. The evil stepmother is here too, not making the life easy for Danielle(Elle). All through the book, you could make connections between Geekerella and the old Cinderella tale. Big or small, they were all very well done! So for a fairy tale lover like me, it was brilliant!

In a geeky world

What is so original in this book? The geeky part. By that, I mean that Danielle is OBSESSED with this old TV shows Starfield. Her mom and dad were crazy about it too and even created a convention for all fans to regroup. So yeah, she is deep into it. As someone who may or may not be obsessed with TV shows, I could definitely understand how you can love a show so much that it becomes part of your life.
What triggers the story? They are doing a reboot of Starfield, with new actors Danielle is not the biggest fan about. She talks about it on her blog and it kind of gets viral. In parallel, she starts talking with this super fan that really gets her, and she decides to join a costume contest at this year’s convention. Lots of stuff happening…. lots of chances for Danielle to lose everything she loves!

What about the Prince?

What changes compared to the Cinderella tale? We kind of know a bit more about the Prince here! Darien is the new actor cast to pay Carmindor, the lead role in the Starfield movie, and unfortunately for him, the fans do not approve. Hard when you are a huge lover of the show like he is!
Half of the book is from his point of view, chapters alternating between Elle and him. It made it more dynamic and interesting! Alternate points of view can be a win or lose, but here, it definitely brought something to the book!

In a few words

Mixing the fandom world and romance, this fairy tale 2.0 was sweet and funny, and it will make you believe in magic once more 😉

See you for a cup!

Elise
