Hello little bookdragons! Today I’m excited to share with you my experience reading Vengeful by VE Schwab. I don’t even know where to start to review this book! It is such outside of everything else I read… but bear with me, I’ll try! (warning: contains spoilers on book 1)
Sydney once had Serena—beloved sister, betrayed enemy, powerful ally. But now she is alone, except for her thrice-dead dog, Dol, and then there’s Victor, who thinks Sydney doesn’t know about his most recent act of vengeance.
Victor himself is under the radar these days—being buried and re-animated can strike concern even if one has superhuman powers. But despite his own worries, his anger remains. And Eli Ever still has yet to pay for the evil he has done.
An incredible set of characters
If there is one thing that can be said about the characters in Vengeful, it is that they are not good. They are actually quite terrible human beings. They look for power, revenge or survival… and they are ready to do anything and everything to get what they want. Victor, Sydney, Marcella, June, Eli…all the characters we follow are AMAZING. We are in their head, and we know, in a way, what makes them bad. We kind of see their point of view. And because of that, we grow attached to them. We even want them to succeed in their dark deeds. It’s crazy when I think how much we can love such terrible people, but that’s Schwab to you 😉
A plot that keeps building up and up and up
What I already loved in Vicious and was happy to find here again: the way the story unravels. We jump in the past, from several years ago to a few hours before… the action. We follow one character and then another. And it’s not even hard to follow, it just feels so natural. Piece by piece, we are reconstructing the final picture. Chapter by chapter, we see what happened to all the characters, and how, in the end, they connect to each other. Simply brilliant.
In a few words
This book was like its characters, Extra-Ordinary. It’s terrible, it’s beautiful and it’s one of a kind. In addition to the book already being excellent, the narrator really brought each element to life and it was a great experience to discover this book as audio!
See you for a cup!
