Hello fellow bookdragons! How are you surviving this post-Christmas time? On my side, I’m still waiting for my days off to start tonight!! I’m enjoying a few minutes of freedom though, so I decided to talk about one of my most immersive reads of this year: The Wicked King!
I do not have the words to describe properly this book and how much I loved it. Even more complex and tenebrous than The Cruel Prince, the Wicked King takes us to a new level of cunning and treachery, while surrounded by the beauty of Faerie.

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.
The first lesson is to make yourself strong.
After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

Be aware of the Faeries!

One of the things that make this series so amazing is the magical world it takes place in. Full of magic and danger, people who want power more than anything and are ready to do anything to get there. A world where everybody is ready to bargain, but where every word is a trap. Holly Black really created a unique mix between the wonder we can have facing magical lands and whimsical creatures… and the horror and fear at what these creatures have the power to do. Amorals and yet so innocents sometimes, wanting to play with human puppets and against each other, these faeries are not from childhood tales. Their love is more poisonous than their hate and their pretty smiles hide daggers. Every page transported me in this world, and I was both in awe and so afraid for the characters I love! It is a real feat to create such an incredible setting to weave a story, and I fell hard for it!

Jude and Cardan

It is always about these two and the dangerous games they are playing. Together or against each other, it is hard to be sure. Separately, they are already great characters. But together, they are something else! They have one of the most interesting relationships I ever read about in books. It is intoxicating and I just want more, while they also make one ache and suffer!
What I also love with them is that they always surprise me. They are unexpected and I can’t help but wonder where the next book will lead us, and what the end game will be (bet I’m gonna need tissues for that)

In a few words

READ. THIS. SERIES. And if you have read the Cruel Prince already, fear not! The Wicked King is even better and more addicting. It’s like faery music, once you start, you can’t stop!

See you for a cup,
