Hello my darlings! You know what day it is? It is the release day of The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi! I’ve been in love with her writing since I read the first pages of Star-touched queen, and I was SO EXCITED when I heard about the Gilded Wolves coming out! A mix of history, treasure hunt, parties… and more. Let’s just say I was not disappointed!

Paris, 1889: The world is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. In this city, no one keeps tabs on secrets better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier, Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. But when the all-powerful society, the Order of Babel, seeks him out for help, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.
To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts: An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian who can’t yet go home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in all but blood, who might care too much.
Together, they’ll have to use their wits and knowledge to hunt the artifact through the dark and glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the world, but only if they can stay alive.

A Paris full of secrets

I won’t lie, it took me a little bit to understand everything that was happening in this book, as Roshani built a pretty complex world. But I’m saying that in the right way. You can only be swept and transported in this lush, dark Paris. Furthermore, in the secrets of the Order of Babel, a very ancient society that works in the shadow to forge the world. And that might be its downfall if a secret artifact is found by the wrong people! To avoid that, the Order calls on a team of misfits and send them on a very dangerous quest, that will call on old myths, history (and all the problems of colonialism and overtaking other people’s culture), mathematics, explosions and a lot of spying and disguise. You can’t ask for more to be kept entertained while you are reading. Roshani Chokshi has built a complex spider web, and we can only be caught up in it.

An incredible band of misfits

What makes this book even better: its characters. Séverin, Enrique, Tristan, Leila, Zofia (and even Hypnos). They are all so unique, with pasts that could break your heart but still such a fire burning in their souls. We have a beautiful chance to discover them all because of the multiple POV. Each chapter is told with the perspective of one of the « Gilded Wolves » and it is very easy to differentiate them (on the audio version there is one female and one male narrator) as they all bring a very different perspective on the world. Séverin, always planning and calculating, Zofia, seeing all the world through mathematics, or Leila and her passionate nature. All fascinating, all facing their insecurities or sharing with us their struggles to fit in this world.

In a few words

I was captivated by this book, its universe and its characters, from the very first page. I do not feel like I’m doing enough justice to this imaginative and luxurious universe with this review, but I tried and I hope I made you want to read it :p As for me, I’m dying to dive back into it and live new adventures with the Gilded Wolves!

See you for a cup,
