Hey guys! Today let’s talk about a book that’s completely out of my comfort zone: Somewhere only we know. A K-pop star (and I know NOTHING about K-pop except it is music), a young paparazzi and all of Hong Kong to discover! I was not sure how I would feel about reading that and in the end, even if it was not all to my taste, I did enjoy the journey 😉
10 00 p.m.: Lucky is the biggest K-pop star on the scene, and she’s just performed her hit song « Heartbeat » in Hong Kong to thousands of adoring fans. She’s about to debut on The Tonight Show in America, hopefully, a breakout performance for her career. But right now? She’s in her fancy hotel, trying to fall asleep but dying for a hamburger.
11 00 p.m.: Jack is sneaking into a fancy hotel, on assignment for his tabloid job that he keeps secret from his parents. On his way out of the hotel, he runs into a girl wearing slippers, a girl who is single-mindedly determined to find a hamburger. She looks kind of familiar. She’s very cute. He’s maybe curious.
12:00 a.m.: Nothing will ever be the same.
Lucky the golden K-pop star
Let’s start with the positive: I LOVED Lucky. In the beginning, it as a bit scary what she had to do and be to become this superstar. We are far from glitters and fun! But despite all she went through, Lucky kept a gentle and open heart. She is sweet and ready to discover the world. She is also pretty quick when it comes to verbal fights! She just had all through the book this innocence that I really loved.
Jack, the paparazzi
I really had a harder time with Jack. He had his good moments, but he was also quite a terrible person til almost the end! And a big coward compared to Lucky. Not to play with words but… he was lucky to find her! Of course, they each influence the other through their adventures in Hong Kong, and Jack shows a lot to Lucky (mostly food and OMG I NEED IT ALL) and helps her open her eyes on what she really wants for her life. I just find that Lucky was quick to forgive all he did and well their love at first sight kind of thing was a bit too much for me. But if you like this kind of instant spark (and real teenage love vibes), I’m sure you’ll love the dynamic of these two characters
What I loved the most: discovering Hong Kong with Lucky. I knew nothing about it so having a chance to discover some parts of it, the specific food and « must see » areas was a lot of fun! This book made me crave Asian food for the entire weekend! And maybe, one day, consider visiting Hong Kong.
In a few words
If I was more or less convinced by the love at first sight plotline here, or Jack’s character, I truly loved Lucky and following her in her discovery of freedom in Hong Kong… and in her discovery of herself!
See you for a cup,
