Hey guys! Today I want to tell you about an adult book for once! It is the fourth book in the Chocolat series… maybe you’ve heard about Chocolat, as there was a movie made from it with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. It was a beautiful story, full of the magic of little things and of course, chocolate of all kind! Now that time has passed, Viane had another daughter, and she is the focus of the Strawberry Thief!
Vianne Rocher has settled down. Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, the place that once rejected her, has finally become her home. With Rosette, her ‘special’ child, she runs her chocolate shop in the square, talks to her friends on the river, is part of the community. Even Reynaud, the priest, has become a friend.
But when old Narcisse, the florist, dies, leaving a parcel of land to Rosette and a written confession to Reynaud, the life of the sleepy village is once more thrown into disarray. The arrival of Narcisse’s relatives, the departure of an old friend and the opening of a mysterious new shop in the place of the florist’s across the square – one that mirrors the chocolaterie, and has a strange appeal of its own – all seem to herald some kind of change: a confrontation, a turbulence – even, perhaps, a murder.
Back to Lansquenet-sous-Tannes
We are back to this little village in the heart of France, a village that did not accept Viane and her magic but now love her… or at least accept her. Cause Viane got a daughter with the vagabond Roux, Rosette, and she is a special child. She does not speak and she lives in her own world. And secretly, Viane is happy, as it’s a child who will never go away.
But life has its way… and if we can see that Viane took some of the negative traits of her neighbors… like rejecting this new strang tattoo artist moving next shop! She feels from her the same magic she wields and she is afraid of what it might mean. While I loved Viane characters in the first book, here, she was letting her fears direct, especially her fears of losing Rosette. To be honest it was a bit infuriating though I guess there is a lesson there too. But the Wind comes as he wants… and change with him!
Another character we see a lot is Reynaud, we discover with him Narcisse testament and life story… but also his own troubled past! It was very interesting to see how his character thinks and change.
Finally, we, of course, have Rosette, such a special and magical teen, who is the central elements of the entire book. From her love for Narcisse’s strawberry path and forest to her secret art and powers or the relationship she builds with people around her, she was fascinating!
This book was both about characters, and how they think, grow and change, and about the mystery of Narcisse testament. Actions and reflexion. The mix of it all made a very pleasant book to read, never boring and keeping me curious all the way!
In a few words
With her whimsical writing, Joanne Harris made the magic work again, nothing flamboyant but something very unique that reaches into your soul and makes you feel connected to all the characters you will (re)discover!
See you for a cup,
