Hey guys! Who would have thought I would read one day a book with »teeth » in the title? Not me! But I did, and thankfully, despite this title, there were not that many teeth in this book (though there were a few!).
As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.
When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.
But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.
Traveling through Visidia
We start this book straight with action! Princess Amora being deemed unfit to rule and having to run for her life (after a very gruesome act of magic!). She runs away in a pirate ship, with her unwilling betroth and a mysterious young man who convinced her he needed her to save their world! And so begins a quest, and a race, to uncover the magical secrets of Visidia. While Amora tries to save her kingdom from a danger that has been growing for years, she will also discover the true history of her land… and it will change everything! I really liked the journey we are brought through, for all the magical aspects (cause almost everybody has power on the islands) and the travel itself. We alternate between scenes at sea and on land, and that gave a well-paced reading.
I was also positively surprised when we learn about the true story of Visidia (I won’t say more!), like that was my favorite part of the book I think!!
But yet an uneven reading
What stopped me from fully enjoying this story is that I found it uneven in two ways: first, the main character. In the first chapters, I thought she was a bit insufferable like everything was due to her. Ok, she is a princess and has been pampered all her life but still! She gets better after and is an ok character, but there were still moments where I rolled my eyes.
The other thing I found to be a bit inconsistent was the action scenes, they did not always flow super well. Some of them were really good … others where meh, and sometimes it felt like it was moving a bit too fast!
I would be indulgent on this aspect though, as this was the first book for Adalyn Grace, and I truly believe it is something she will get better on!
In a few words
A super interesting magical world, with a lot of promising elements, even if the story-telling itself was a bit uneven. Perfect for all fantasy fans who are less picky than me haha
See you for a cup,
PS: I thought this book was a standalone…apparently not!
