Hey bookdragons! Fancy a little trip to Italy? Pesto, mazapan and all that? Plus witches of course! Oh, ooops, forgot to tell you, there might also be demons on the lose… still interested? Then let’s dive into Kingdom of the Wicked!
Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Vittoria misses dinner service at the family »s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to find her sister »s killer and to seek vengeance at any cost-even if it means using dark magic that »s been long forbidden.
Then Emilia meets Wrath, one of the Wicked-princes of Hell she has been warned against in tales since she was a child. Wrath claims to be on Emilia »s side, tasked by his master with solving the series of women »s murders on the island. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seems…
Sins are here to stay!
In Kingdom of the Wicked, we follow Emilia and her sister Vittoria, twin witch sisters living in Palermo. They have a happy life, working at their parents restaurant (all the food talk OMG I wish I could have eaten there!), with a grandma always reminding them to protect themselves against demons, especially the Princes of Hell!
Emilia and Vittoria think this is just folktales until…. until the worse happens and Vittoria is found dead, her heart stolen. Emilia, blinded by grief and a will to get revenge, will Summon non other than Wrath, one of the Princes of Hell she was warned against. And he is …handsome. Almost irresistible ( I would definitely not have resisted).
When she decided to find her sister’s murder, Emilia didn’t realize the path she would have to take to get her revenge…while she and Wrath tries to find the murdered, Emilia will also uncover secrets her sister kept from her, but also some involving her family line.
In an Italy that really had an Inferno vibe, Emilia will face death and worse to bring justice to her sister!
I was truly captivated by the world building, by how Sins were personified, and by all that we discover on the magical universe. It was lush and dangerous, 100% atmospheric.
Now, my problem with this book was …. it was very confusing at times. Like were changing of time or place without any indication, it was also really hard to understand when the story was taking place, even approximatively, because we were lacking descriptions on daily life elements (like, how Emilia could read at night if there was no electricity? I was really puzzled it was never mentioned). This unfortunately was present enough to make the reading less pleasant.
In a few words
A new dark and mystical series, with daring witches and irresistible demons… I was hooked, despite some lack of clarity in the writing sometimes. And I can’t wait to follow Emilia, to Hell if I must!
See you for a cup,
